Miniature Displacement Transducers in Harsh Environments

Apr 23, 2023

The sensor solution provides its miniature LVDT position sensor, which uses a variety of building materials and can provide highly accurate and reliable position measurement for applications under extreme conditions. In addition to stainless steel, special alloys such as Monel, Inconel, Hastelloy, and Titanium are also used to extend the reliability of their displacement sensors in harsh environments such as radiation, seawater, corrosive acids, and high/low temperatures and pressures. The materials for micro LVDT structures are selected for each individual application based on parameters such as corrosion, pressure, and magnetic properties throughout the entire operating temperature range.

For example, due to the long-term reliability of sensors required for seawater applications, as hardware replacement and maintenance are expensive and time-consuming, when the components are completely exposed to seawater, titanium, Inconel alloy, or Hastelloy alloy can be used to construct their position sensors. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content in these alloys can extend the chemical resistance of sensors to seawater to 10000 feet or more, with an external pressure of approximately 5000psi.The miniature LVDT that can operate in shallow water or hot water with high oxygen content can be made of Monel 400, a special nickel base alloy, which can provide greater resistance to pitting corrosion caused by oxidation and microbial invasion.

The use of thick diameter sensor shells made of this special alloy can avoid corrosion during long-term operation.

1. Frequency modulation interference and electrostatic interference

Both frequency modulation interference and electrostatic interference may cause the digital display of the electronic scale of the linear displacement sensor to jump. So, the signal line of the electronic ruler should be separated from the strong current line of the equipment in a separate slot. The electronic ruler must be forcibly grounded. The signal line needs to use shielded wire, and a section of the electrical box should be grounded to the shielded wire. If there is high-frequency interference, the voltage measurement using a multimeter usually shows normal, but the displayed numbers will continue to jump; When static interference occurs, the situation is also the same as high-frequency interference.

2. Power supply of sensors

If the power supply capacity of the displacement sensor is insufficient, it will cause the following situations: the movement of the melt adhesive will cause the display of the clamping electronic scale to change and fluctuate, or the movement of the clamping will cause the display of the injection electronic scale to fluctuate, causing measurement errors to increase. If the driving power supply of the solenoid valve is shared with the power supply of the linear displacement sensor, this situation is more likely to occur.

3. Wiring of displacement sensors

The three wires of a linear displacement sensor cannot be connected incorrectly, and the power and output wires cannot be exchanged. If the wires above are connected incorrectly, there will be a large linear error, which is difficult to control. The accuracy of the control will also become poor, and the display is prone to jumping and other phenomena.

4. Specific requirements for neutrality, parallelism, and angle

The installation of a linear displacement sensor requires good alignment, but the parallelism can allow for an error of up to 0.5mm and the angle can allow for an error of ± 12 °. But if the parallelism error and angle error are both too large, it will cause the display of numbers to jump. Therefore, when such a situation occurs, it is necessary to adjust the parallelism and angle.

5. Data display issues

If there is a regular fluctuation of displayed data or if there is no displayed data, the technician needs to check the connecting wire for any signs of damage and determine whether there is a short circuit to ground caused by regular contact with the machine casing.

The year 2020 is coming to an end. This year is a My Lucky Star year for domestic sensor manufacturers. Under the influence of the epidemic, foreign production capacity is insufficient, prompting some users of foreign sensors to switch to domestic ones, providing a lot of opportunities for domestic sensors. I hope that under this opportunity, more excellent domestically produced sensors can emerge.
